2015 Just Write Celebration!

TN_pencil_24Greetings Parents,

On Monday, June 1st, our students will be celebrating their writing for the year. We are extending a formal invitation to all parents, or a special adult, to attend our Open House at 11:00 am in our classroom. Each student will have a writing piece or two to share, and will take their adult on a tour of the school to see other’s writing. We would love to see as many parents as possible on Monday, June 1 at 11:00 am in our classroom for this special time!

Homecoming Tonight!

footballHey Everyone!  Going to the football game tonight? If so, it’s Homecoming for the Hudsonville Eagles, as well as a fundraiser for the Hudsonville Education Foundation!  You can dunk your favorite teacher and participate in other really fun pre-game activities!  So hope to see you there!

We have had another great week, families!  My fourth graders have landed on “Outstanding” at least twice this week! Won’t be long and we will have a class celebration for earning our “10 Tallies”!

In math, we have been working FEVERISHLY on subtracting multi-digit numbers up into the 10 thousands and 100 thousands.  We do have a couple of students who are still struggling with understanding when to “ungroup” (borrow from) the next number over, especially when there are zeros involved.  Parents, you would be a blessing to me if you would just double check with your student to see if they have the concept or not.  Just throw a few problems down on paper and see if they can do them.  If they can’t, I would love it if you would try to explain it to them and have them practice a bit.  Sometimes hearing it two or three times can help them finally turn that “lightbulb” on.  Thanks!

Hope you have a great weekend!  And as we sing in our song hear at school, “Mrs. Q’s kids are made of gold!”

The next honor goes to Brycen K for writing a super-cool story called “The Snowboarding Trip”!  He got to sit on the special “Writer’s Throne” while the second grade teachers acted his story out in a skit!  Way to go to you, Brycen!  We are so proud of you, too!!  And to all parents who attended our writing celebration on Thursday, I send a big THANKS FOR COMING your way!  It means a lot to your students and to me, too.

“Enchanted Castle Celebration”

IMG_1169Kings, Queens, Knights, Princes, Princesses, and Wizards all dared to enter into the “Enchanted Castle” last Friday!  Complete with a castle moat, upon which you could only cross if you knew the “exact” time, students celebrated the finishing up of our fairy tale unit!  We not only read many, many fairy tales but we wrote our own as well.  Below are pictures of our celebration!  Mr. Bowen’s class came to read our fairy tales with us and one nice student in Mr. B’s class said, “Mrs. Q, I think those were some of the best fairy tales I’ve ever read!”  So take heart, second graders!  Even the third graders think you are great writers!!  Our final picture is of us toasting to our future writers!

Our First Writers’ Celebration

IMG_1061This past Friday (11/6), we had our first Writers’ Celebration.  The students and I celebrated the milestones they have already made in writing for the year.  Many gains were celebrated since the beginning of second grade.  Periods and capitals are starting to show up!  Book spelling is becoming more of the norm!  Revision is taking place, as well as, good beginnings and solid endings.  Students are using much more detail and talking more about feelings as opposed to just making a “list” of what happened.  It is really exciting to watch this class BLOOM!!!  Mr. Bowen’s third graders came down to share our exuberance and to offer up suggestions to our eager second graders from his really wise third graders!  🙂  It was an awesome celebration!
