2 G Summary!

flowersWhen will we ever be done with this snow??!!  That’s the big question I have been wondering lately, as I’m sure all of you have been too!  I can’t wait to see some green again!

I am looking forward to our conferences this week parents!  Below is a snapshot of our conference schedule.  Please let me know right away if there are any conflicts and you cannot make it.

Screen Shot 2014-03-02 at 12.45.01 PM

We have just finished our big unit on double and triple digit subtraction with ungrouping (borrowing).  Next we move into time.  Please work with your second grader at home on understanding how to tell time on an analog clock.  They will need to know how to tell time by 5 minute increments.

Another Reading Counts session will be starting up again.  So keep those kiddos reading!  And our spring science units will be starting up too.  The first unit will be on matter – solid, liquid, and gas.  🙂

As you saw from Mrs. Reagan’s letter sent in an email, your student will be piloting the new Common Core Assessment online on March 24-27.  This will give us a lot of feedback on how to prepare for the changes and challenges that this new test will present.  You will also notice coming up, that the requirements for reading levels are going to increase over the next year.  We will be talking about this at your child’s conference, so that you know how to prepare for this with your child.  I will also have tutoring lists available, if you are interested in getting your child some extra help for over the summer.  Several of our teachers from this building are on the list and will be great resources for your child.

As always, I thank you for sending me such wonderful students every day to work with!  This has been one of the best classes ever, and I look forward to seeing the great growth we will have from now until summer!!  See you soon!  Mrs. Q

2nd Grade Summary!

apple treeHi Parents and Students!

This is my first post for the year!  I want to say THANK YOU for all of the wonderful supplies you have sent in to support our classroom!  We really appreciate it.  They will be well-used throughout the upcoming weeks and months.

We are off to a really great start.  The children have been doing a great job creating a caring community of learners.  We are learning about our brains and how to calm them.  We are getting back into routines and firing up those brain cells!  We have even starting reading level assessments to make sure we are picking “Just Right” books.

In approximately 2 more weeks, we will be starting library.  Students will be allowed to check out 2 books.  One book will have to be a Reading Counts book, and the other book can be anything they are interested in.  Reading Counts starts this year.  This program takes the place of  the WEB reading your child did in 1st grade.  Every night they will come home with a library book to read in a baggy.  Your student will read their book at home that evening, and then come to school and sign up for a Reading Counts test on the computer.  This test will consist of 10 questions, checking your student’s comprehension of the book.  If your child passes the quiz, they return it to the library and get another one.  If they don’t pass the quiz, they have an opportunity to read the book again the next night, and then try again the next day.  More information will be coming home about this in the future.  Keep your eye out for a gallon size baggy and directions coming home.

Finally, we had fun making this I-Pick video for you below.  Be sure you check it out!

Have a great rest of the week and don’t forget school pictures are this Monday, Sept. 16th!!!      -Mrs. Q

Happy Memorial Day!

tn_118kidwithflowerHi Parents!

It seems it’s been a while since I have posted and I apologize for that!  So much is going on for us here at Georgetown!  Wow!  It seems like we are speeding down a steep hill to the end of this year!  First, I want to say a big “thank you” to those moms who came faithfully every week to help our class do Reading Counts!  Without you, it would have been even harder to get all of our students in for their quizzes on a daily basis.  Thank you also to the moms who planned and volunteered for our parties!  The kids love it when you get involved!  Thank you to all of you parents who provide such a beautiful “Teacher Appreciation Week”.  I sure feel pampered during that week!  And most of all, thank you for sending me the best kids in the world!  I am going to miss them so much next year!!

Two Important Items:  Next week Thursday, 5/30, we are making a swap in our Second Grade Countdown.  Instead of Dessert Day, we are making it Donut Day!  So if you are a mom who volunteered to donate donuts, could you please send them next Thursday, 5/30?  I will send you an email as a reminder!  We will save our trip to “What’s the Scoop” until the second to the last day of school.

Also, your student will need a paper grocery sack with their name on it for the second to the last day of school.  You can send these in any time and I will save them up until that day.

Don’t forget!  Tonight is the School Carnival if you can make it!

And June 6th, all families are invited to have a lunch picnic outdoors with us from 12:00 to 1:00 on the last day.

Have a great Memorial weekend!!  Love, Mrs. Q

2 G Summary! 11/28/11

Hi Parents and Students!

Hope this note finds everyone recuperating from all that turkey!!  Just a couple of updates for this next week!  The first one is that we shop Santa’s Secret Shop on this Wednesday, Nov. 30th.  Please be sure your student has their money envelope here at school that day if they are buying their presents.

The second announcement is that EVERYONE made their Reading Counts goals for this first trimester!!  Soooo, that means . . . PIZZA PARTY!  We will be enjoying our pizza this Friday, Dec. 2!  Your student will not need a lunch that day unless they do not like pizza!  I will have cheese and pepperoni pizza available, as well as drinks and some cookies for dessert.  Way to go everyone!  I am so proud of you!  We now start over with new goals for this next trimester!  We are taking the Reading Counts screener to see if we have moved up levels as well.

Which brings me to another announcement.  No library at all this week, due to Santa’s Secret Shop.  We can read books from home and quiz on those, and we can also read our classroom books and take quizzes.   So we will have to make it work with what we have.

Finally, don’t forget about our Holiday Concert this Thursday night at Fairhaven Reformed Church.  Our program for second grade begins at 6 p.m.  Children need to be there at 5:45.  Follow directions at the church for where your student’s room is to drop them off.  Can’t wait to see all of my beautiful and handsome students dressed in their Christmas best!!

Here’s to a great couple of weeks before Christmas!!  Love, Mrs. Q

2 G Summary – 11/13/11

Parents,

It was so great to meet with all of you last week!  Thank you for your positive comments.  I feel it is so important that we work together as a team to provide the best education we possibly can for your student.  Thank you for sending me such great kids! Each and every one of them is special!

Just a few notes for events coming up.  First of all, Thanksgiving week we only have 2 days of school, so there will be NO HOMEWORK THAT WEEK!  I know all of my students are crying about this right now, but tell them it will be ok!  🙂

The week after that, we shop Santa’s Secret Shop!  I believe on Wednesday, Nov. 30th.  I know that it is a little early and it will be hard to keep those secrets for so long, but we’ll have to do it!  🙂

Thursday, Dec. 1, will be our Holiday Program at Fairhaven Reformed Church.  Our program will begin at 6 p.m.  Usually, children need to be there by 5:30 or so.  Keep a watch on the Georgetown Blog and I will update as well.

Friday, December 16th, will be our Holiday Party here at school.  What has been very successful as a gift exchange, is for each parent to shop the dollar store and buy 25 of some little gift (erasers, pencils, stickers, etc.) totalling no more than 5$.  We make Christmas bags here at school, and students drop their little gifts into each bag.  This way each student will have fun discovering what little goodies have been dropped into their bags.  And this should be very cost-effective for parents too.  Please let me know if anyone needs help with this, because I would be willing to take care of it for you.

Last of all, I just want to say as we get ready to go into a very special time of year, that I wish each and every one of you a very blessed holiday season!

With love,     Mrs. Q

2 G Summary for 10/8/11!

Wow!  This second grade classroom really rocks!!  We have lots of news for you this week!  First, our field trip to Klackle’s Orchard was really fun this week!  Thank you to all our parents who came along, the official class chaperones and the moms and dads that drove the extra miles to be with us!

We picked apples and pumpkins, took a hay ride, listened to how bees help the apple trees grow apples, and had lots of fun playing on all the cool stuff Klackle’s had for kids to play on.  Mrs. Q even locked her class up in a jail!

Next, on Friday, we had our first Writers’ Celebration!  You will be impressed Moms and Dads when you see how far your student has progressed in their writing in only  5 weeks!  We’ll be sharing lots about our writing during Parent/Teacher conferences coming up on November 7, 8, and 9.  We read each other’s writings and gave constructive feedback to each other.  Then we had a toast to celebrate how far we have come and how far we will go this year!!
