Market Day!!!

marketdayDear Parents,

Our students are working on an Economics Unit for social studies, in which part of their learning involves creating a product to sell at our Market Day on Feb. 13th.  In order to create their products, the students have created a list of supplies that we will need in order to create the goods that they are going to sell.  We are asking parents, if they are able, to donate some of the following supplies and send them in by Monday, January 27th!  Here’s what we need:

duct tape of all designs

ziploc sandwich bags

toothpicks

Q-tips

lots of clay in lots of colors

red yarn

googley eyes of all sizes

sports stickers

small letter stickers

bobby pins

2-4 new sets of markers

paint you can use with clay?

We appreciate anything that you can supply!  Students are excited to get into production next week!  On Market Day, we throw open all of our second grade classroom doors and sell our wares!  Students will learn about goods and services, consumers, production, and profit.  It’s one of the best days in second grade!

Thanks for your help!

Market Day a Huge Success!!

Thursday, February 7th, was a day of much excitement as the second graders had their Market Day.  Market Day is the culmination of an economics unit in social studies, where the students are learning about the general ideas of wants and needs and how communities provide goods and services to fill those.  Students design a product that second graders may need, and after approval from their boss (Mrs. Q), they go into production making these items.  Market Day involves creating an open market atmosphere, where the entire second grade becomes producers and consumers!  Some students sold all of their product right away, creating a scarcity.  Other students eventually sold everything, and yet others, never sold out and had to put their items on sale.  Every group made a profit!  Thanks to all of the donations from parents!  It was a great day!

2 G Summary! 2/4/13

Hi Everyone!  Due to no homework packet this week, I thought I better post a quick update!  Yes, it’s true!  No homework packet in honor of Winter Break this weekend!  I thought everyone would love the reprieve!  🙂  We are, however, having spelling words.  The test will be on Thursday instead of Friday this week.  No spelling next week though (the week of the 11th).

Tomorrow, Feb. 5th, we are having stuffed animal day.  🙂

Market Day is this Thursday at 9:45 or so.  It will be a lot of fun!  I will try to get pictures on the blog so you can see all of the students’ hard work!!

Valentines Party is on Feb. 14th from 12:40 – 1:45!  You can send in valentines any time this week or next!

Stay warm and Happy Winter Break!!

Market Day – A Big Hit!!!

What a great morning for our 2012 Second Grade Market Day!  Students in all 4 second grade classrooms had their booths set up with all of their “product” created to sell to shoppers for tickets! Consumers travelled from room to room looking for great deals, while the producers stood watching, proud of all their hard work!  Some students experienced “scarcity” when their product completely sold out early in the hour. Other students had to make “opportunity cost” choices when they only had so many tickets to spend.  All in all, students made a “profit“, not only in tickets, but in the experience of having an awesome market day!!

2 G Summary 2/27/12

Hi Everyone!

Looking forward to conferences beginning tonight (2/27/12)!  I can’t wait to discuss with you all of the great progress your students are making!

Here are a couple of notes for this week:

*No spelling words this week!  Due to the shorter week, we will just review the words we have had and do a little refresher course on our handwriting.  🙂

*Market Day – One of the most exciting days of the year (that’s what the second graders say!) is this coming Thursday, Mar. 1 from 10:30 to 11:30.  Our second graders sell their products to the whole second grade (and rumor has it that the third graders might come too!).  So if you’re available and just want to stop in a minute, you are more than welcome.   Thanks again, parents, to those of you who have donated “resources” that we have used for “raw materials” for our products.

*Math – We are graphing right now, but this unit also revisits money.  Please check your second grader out on the different values of the coins and adding up a variety of coins too.

Have a great week and I will see you soon!!

Mrs. Q

2 G Summary! 2/13/12

Hi Everyone!

Happy Valentine’s Day!  We are looking forward to our party this Tuesday from 2-3 p.m.!  Followed by Winter Break this Thursday and Friday!  What a great week for the students!

This week, slips went home with a date and time for our next round of Parent/Teacher Conferences.  These dates and times were duplicated from our fall conferences.  Just let me know if there is a conflict and we can re-schedule.  Parents with multiple children at Georgetown need to let me know asap, because it will take some juggling to get all teachers lined up.  Conferences will be held Feb. 27, 28, and 29.  I am looking forward to meeting with you to discuss your child’s progress!

Parents, you may have some excited children coming home and talking about our upcoming Market Day!  This is part of our Economics Unit in 2nd grade.  We are learning about “Consumers” and “Producers”, raw materials, production, wants, needs, and scarcity.  Your student will be working with a group of 2-3 other students to develop a product and manufacture it.  Then we throw open all of the second grade doors on Market Day and sell all of our wares!  This year we are incorporating recyclables into our products.  So if you hear your student coming home and saying “we need this/that”, just know that it is for their product.  PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE do not go out and buy anything!  These are products we are supposed to be making from raw materials we already have here at school and at home.

I am happy to report that we are all telling time successfully on analog clocks!  Yay!  Keep practicing, because this gets re-visited in third grade!  Next we start our unit on graphing in math.

I hope everyone has a great Winter Break!   And see you soon at P/T Conferences!

PS.  No homework this week!  And no spelling words either!  I know the students are crying about now!!

Love – Mrs. Q   🙂

2 G SUMMARY ! 2/3/12

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in second grade!  We are all starting to tell time ACCURATELY on analog clocks!  THAT is exciting!  Another exciting detail is that we recently re-tested for Reading Counts and every student has gone up in reading levels!!  Like I said, I LOVE THIS TIME OF YEAR!!!  🙂

Some really fun things are coming up for us!  First, is the Valentine’s Party!  It will be held on Feb. 14th from 2-3 p.m.  Valentines can be sent in to school starting this week. See an earlier blog posting if you need the names in our classroom.

Another exciting thing is that for social studies, we are planning to vote on an activity to do for our school as a community project.  Lots of ideas have been flowing and we’ll let you know what we have decided.

Finally, we will be getting ready for Market Day soon, in which, second graders develop and produce a product to sell as part of our economics unit!  We plan to use recyclables in our projects as a way of doing another service for our community!  So moms and dads, please save your toilet paper tubes, paper towel tubes, and plastic containers that look like they may have some good use!  Send them into school, and we will begin to accumulate some raw materials from which we will construct our projects!

Last of all, parent – teacher conferences are coming up again on Feb. 27, 28, and 29!  We will be using the same schedule that we used in the fall.  Watch your child’s mail coming home as I will put in a reminder slip for the day and time to meet.  If any conflicts arise, be sure to let me know as soon as possible!  We’ll make the necessary changes.

Hope everyone has a great week ahead!  Love, Mrs. Q

Market Day!

Market Day is the culmination of our Economics Unit in social studies!  It is one of the students’ favorite activities!  Students learn about producers and consumers and what it takes to use natural, human and capital resources to make their product. We talk about scarcity and profit as the students make decisions about how much to sell their product for.  Students learn a lot about cooperation in a group and how to really work hard to get work done.  The end result is that we throw open all second grade classroom doors and students get to market their wares!  We even have sales and scrolling advertisements!  Below are some pictures from our day!

Market Day!

We had a very successful and exciting Market Day!  Students produced and then sold their wares at our Annual Second Grade Market Day!  The doors were thrown open at 1:00 and the sales began!  We had airplanes, clay animals, ticket holders, flags, parachute people and mystery envelopes for sale!  Some students sold out!  We did have a scarcity of some items, which drove up the price of that product.  We did have great deals at the end when items were put on sale!  Market Day is one of our favorite activities of the year!
