Chapter Book Club Book Report

tn_momboyreadings5Hi Students and Parents,

Chapter Book Club has started for us this week!  It is a fun way for the students and I, to read, share books with each other, and have lunch together!  For each chapter book your student reads (either with or without you, parents!), he/she can earn punches for their Chapter Book Club punch card here at school!  For example, if they read a Magic Tree House book with you, those are worth 3 punches.  In order to get these 3 punches, they must first fill out a Chapter Book Club Book Report.  These are simple answers to be typed in, either by the student or by parents (much faster if the parent types the student’s answers).  The Chapter Book Club Book Report is hooked to this post and will also be in the blogroll.  Once your student hits 10 punches on their punchcard, we get to have lunch together!!  So get READING students!!  And let’s have lunch!!

Happy New Year!! 2012

Happy New Year to all of my second graders and their families!  I hope that everyone has had a safe and happy holiday season!  I am excited to get back to school and see everyone!  I have been missing all of you!

January is one of my favorite months!  The ground is usually snow covered and life quiets down a bit.  In the life of a second grader, this month is where I really see progress and growth.   It makes me proud when I see my students really begin to make changes in their writing for the better.  Boys and girls will come to me and say, “Mrs. Q, I can read chapter books now!!”   And I will see less and less counting on fingers when working on math problems!  It’s a wonderful time to be growing.

Speaking of chapter books, this is one of my favorite times because we start “Chapter Book Club“!  Every student will get a “Chapter Book Punch Card”.  As students finish chapter books, they fill in a mini book report.  Each type of book is worth a certain number of punches, for example a Magic Tree House book will equal 2 punches.  Once they get 10 punches, they are invited to have lunch with me!  I bake brownies and we have a fun lunchtime together!  Every student will get the chance to have lunch with me, so keep on reading!!

In math, moms and dads, we are going to need your expertise at home in helping your second grader really understand double digit addition and subtraction.  You will be hearing new terminology for “carrying” and “borrowing”, but the math is still the same, and I will be sure to send home the parent letters that explain how we are teaching this.

One other change I will be putting in place, will be that I am going to try to do a brief “mini” newsletter on the homework packet each week, so that if you did not get the chance to get on the blog that week, you will still know what is going on.

Last of all, I want to thank those wonderful moms who planned and executed our Christmas party!  We had a wonderful time!  And thank you for all of my fantastic gifts!  I have been enjoying each and every one of them over this Christmas break!  I have the best class in the world!!            Love – Mrs. Q

Mrs. Q’s Update – 1/12/11

TN_31-08-07_04Hi Everyone!  Hope this post finds everyone in good health and good spirits!  It is good to be back in school.  Routine is good for all of us!  Last week the kids were sleepy.  This week — not so much!  🙂  We’re back to our normal energy levels!  Whew!  I wish I could bottle it!!  🙂

We have started our “How To” writings! Watch for your student’s story to come home because I would love for them to present the idea that they are writing on.  For example, one student is writing on how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.  I would love it if she could bring some supplies to demonstrate her writing.  More will be coming home on this idea for next week.

We are also beginning a unit on telling time next week.  Your student will need to be able to tell time up to five and one minute intervals on an analog clock (non-digital).  Another math item to help with is working with your student on adding and subtracting fluently. In other words, being able to add and subtract quickly without using their fingers.  Using fingers occasionally is not a bad thing, but I am seeing students use fingers to add 9 + 1!  Grabbing some flashcards to practice daily for a while would surely help!

One more thing!  You may have heard your child mention “Chapter Book Club“!  As a fun way to really get into chapter book reading, every time your student reads a chapter book, he/she will get punches on their “Chapter Book Club Card”.  When he/she gets 10 punches, we’ll have lunch together and I’ll serve brownies!!  So all Mrs. Q’s Book Buddies, Keep On Reading!!

Have a great rest of your week!  Love – Mrs. Q
