2011 Walk for Water!

DSC_0010What a cold blustery day we had today for our Walk for Water at Huizenga Park in Zeeland, Michigan!  Jackie from Mrs. Kuieck’s class and Joey from Mrs. Quigley’s class joined Mrs. Q in walking for water.  We walked the 2.4 miles to get our water and carry it back to the water filters at Huizenga Park.  In Rwanda, Africa, the average person walks 3.7 miles to get water for the day.  They carry their water in 20 liter “jerry cans”.  Joey, Jackie and Mrs. Q tried carrying these jerry cans and we could not get very far without getting real tired.  It took 2 or 3 people to clumsily carry 1 can!

We came to a creek bed where we knelt and filled our water jugs we brought!  Then we carried our smaller jugs back to the water filters, where we poured our water to clean it.  We learned that in Rwanda, a child dies every 20 seconds due to water born illnesses.  This makes us feel so grateful to live in a country where we have clean water every day that runs out of our faucets.  The money that was raised today from our walk will be used by two organizations to build water filters for many families in Rwanda.  In spite of the damp weather, we came away with a great appreciation for all we have!
